Jack Kao AKA Gao JieOne of my favourite Taiwanese movies is Hsu Hsia-ming's "Dust of Angels". It's one of those 'slice of life' pieces about teenagers, gangsters and a drug deal gone wrong. The leading actor plays the part of a heroin addicted gang boss who somehow manages to maintain an air of nobility.A friendly guy named Jack used to drop by at our production office from time to time. One night while out drinking with some friends we bumped into Jack and I whispered to someone,
"He looks kinda like that guy in Dust of Angels". I was stunned that someone with such screen presence could be so unassuming. I've since heard that many real gangsters in Taiwan refuse to accept that Jack is just playing a part and ask him things like what kind of gun he prefers. I'm not surprised; just watching him cook food in his latest film made me feel hungry. This image is from Taipei's recent Techno Full Moon Party. Jack's not playing a part here, this is the real man!
